The Farmer in the Dell

This weekend my dad and grandmother came up from South Carolina for a visit. It was the perfect weekend for a visit and plenty of activities. The day started out with breakfast and giving Andrew time to warm up to my dad again. While he talks to him often, he hasn't seen him since June when we went down for my great-grandmother's funeral. Afterwards Andrew asked to go outside with the guys. They were in the field behind my uncle's house tilling and preparing to plant a few rows of vegetables. Andrew has recently taken an interest in planting things, so this was right up his allley. He went right out and started yelling for a shovel because he wanted to plant a "tomato tree." Instead of the tree, he was able to help plant a few rows of string beans.

Andrew even called me in after he had finished a few rows to show me how to put the seeds down and cover them with dirt. I really wasn't into it since I'd just gotten a pedicure yesterday and couldn't see voluntarily allowing dirt and who knows what else touch my OPI Most Honorable Red polished toes.

After they were done, Andrew came over to me and told me something that made my heart swell. He leaned in and whispered "Your dad is cool." It really made me feel good to know that my son thought my dad was cool. Here lately, his dad is the only cool person he knows and the only man he ever really gets to spend time with.

Hopefully next month we'll be able to go back out and see the fruits of his labor in Uncle Mike's garden. Until then, see you later little string beans!
